Figures are minimums from UG-MSR 2023 as amended in April 2026. The hospital must also run at an average bed occupancy of at least 80% a year. Read the full schedules for department-wise detail before you finalise.
What stays the same
- At least four lecture theatres: the number stays, but each must seat the new intake plus 20%.
- One student practical laboratory per subject (Histology, Clinical Physiology, Biochemistry and others): the labs stay, but they need enough workstations for the larger batch, in turns if needed.
- The skills laboratory is at least 600 m² for intakes up to 150, and larger for 200 or 250.
- Each museum seats at least 50 students.
- Hostels must house at least 75% of students, interns and residents, so the number of places grows with every batch.
Conditions for asking for more seats
- UG-MSR 2023 says a college seeking more seats must have admitted its current batch meeting all the criteria for the seats it already has, and must meet all requirements for the higher number.
- In April 2026 NMC removed the 150-seat cap on a college's total and the rule of 100 seats per 10 lakh population.
- NMC's notice for 2026-27 allowed an increase of at most 100 seats at a time; check the current cycle's notice for the limit that applies to you.
- NMC assesses a college only for the number of seats it applies for and does not grant a smaller increase instead. Anything incomplete or under construction on the date of application leads to rejection.
Fees and bank guarantee in the 2027-28 cycle
NMC's notice of 8 October 2026 sets the application fee for a seat increase at ₹7.5 lakh + 18% GST per 50 seats for private colleges, plus a non-refundable registration fee of ₹2 lakh. Private colleges also give an e-bank guarantee of ₹5 crore for every extra 50 seats after the Letter of Permission. The same notice gives the dates for 2027-28: see our 2027-28 application guide.
What you will need to buy
- Hospital: beds, mattresses and bedside furniture for the extra wards, ICU beds and monitors, operation theatre tables, lights and anaesthesia equipment for the added theatres, and OPD furniture for the higher patient load.
- College: more dissection tables and stools, microscopes and lab workstations, extra seating in each lecture theatre, library tables, chairs, racks and computers.
- Hostels and mess: beds, study tables, chairs and wardrobes for the new students, and more dining tables.
- Faculty and staff areas: tables, chairs and almirahs for the added faculty.
